When we asked ourselves what the biggest cities in the world were, we quickly realized that the rankings available on the Internet were often incorrect. Indeed, these rankings often confuse the notions of municipality and conurbation. That’s why, today, we’re bringing you our ranking of the world’s biggest cities in 2024, based solely on municipalities. Happy reading!
Unsurprisingly, the world’s largest city is in China, and it’s Chongqing. With over 35 million inhabitants, it’s the most densely populated city in the world. By comparison, Paris has “only” 2.1 million inhabitants, yet is the largest city in France. In another unusual comparison, Chongqing is a municipality the size of Austria… Nothing less! Shanghai takes second place in the ranking of the world’s largest cities. With 27.8 million inhabitants. It is one of the top 3 largest cities in China.
Beijing is the world’s third-largest city, with over 21.9 million inhabitants. It is one of the top 3 largest cities in China.
We end China’s domination of this ranking with the city of Shenzhen. The city has 17.56 million inhabitants at the last census in 2020. It is close to Hong Kong, which has 7.3 million inhabitants.
We now leave China for the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kinshasa is the most populous city on the African continent, with over 17 million inhabitants at the last census in 2021.
We stay on the African continent for the world’s sixth-largest city, Lagos. Located in Nigeria, this city has a population of 16.3 million. This makes Lagos the second most populous city in Africa.
Back to China with the municipality of Chengdu. The city has a population of 16.2 million and is the most populous city in central China. The city is notably known worldwide for its panda research and breeding center.
Head for Turkey to discover the 8 th largest city in the world, Istanbul. The city is home to over 15.8 million inhabitants.
Back to China with the largest city in the south of the country, Canton or also known as Guangzhou. Today, this city is home to over 14.9 million inhabitants.
We end our ranking of the world’s 10 largest cities with Tokyo. Japan’s capital has a population of 14.2 million. One of Tokyo’s best-known landmarks is the Shibuya Crossing, a crosswalk that is used by 2.4 million people every day.
