Kotor Bay, must-sees for a trip to Montenegro
The old town of Kotor
This medieval town, also known as Cattaro, is one of the best known and prettiest! For us, it’s a must-see on any road trip to Montenegro. Although quite touristy, the fortified town, listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, is well worth a visit for its narrow cobbled streets, warm squares and lovely views of the surrounding cliffs. And if you’re a cat lover… You’ll be in heaven! The city is nicknamed the City of Cats for a good reason: they’re everywhere! Let yourself be carried along the narrow streets and lose yourself in this labyrinth that is the city of Kotor, with some lovely discoveries awaiting you.
Perast
This pretty little waterside town is well worth a visit for its authenticity and views over the two islands with buildings dating from the 15th century. Opposite it: Notre Dame du Rocher island, with its Notre Dame des Rochers church, and Saint-Georges island. We chose to take a boat trip to discover these two islets and enjoy views of Perast from the water. In our opinion, half a day is enough to wander around Perast on foot; it’s quite small but worth the detour all the same!
The serpentine road
Take the famous serpentine road in the heights of Kotor, which takes you around more than 30 tight bends. A driving experience… 😂 Once at the top, you’ll have a superb view of the Bay of Kotor!
Where to eat in the Kotor Bay in Montenegro?
- Restaurant Horizont: high above the bay, you’ll have an incredible panoramic view! Expect to pay €15 for a platter of local produce (cheese, ham, olives) served on a platform suspended in mid-air. We really recommend the setting!
- La Catedral Pasta Bar: we stumbled across this address specializing in pasta, the atmosphere was relaxed and the dishes rather good.
- Have a drink in Kotor / Church square: settle down to sip a Spritz on the terrace with a view of the beautiful Church in the town of Kotor.
- Breakfast in Kotor: we had breakfast on the terrace at this restaurant and everything was delicious and quite elaborate for only €5 per person.
Where to sleep in the Kotor bay in Montenegro?
When traveling in the Bay of Kotor, you have several options for where to stay: take a hotel in downtown Kotor or take a hotel outside the city. We suggest two alternatives depending on your preferences!
A hotel in downtown Kotor
If you choose one of the apartments here, you can do everything on foot. So you can enjoy a beautiful evening in Kotor, which is what we did and we loved it! The place is air-conditioned, which is very comfortable in Montenegro’s hot summer weather. The apartments are designer and modern, a sure-fire favorite!
View availabilityA hotel with swimming pool in the Bay of Kotor
This hotel is 1km from the old town of Kotor and 100 meters from the beach which is perfect for enjoying a little peace and quiet during your vacation in Kotor. The apartments all have balconies or terraces. On top of that, the hotel has a superb swimming pool with an incredible view of the Bay of Kotor.
