The country is also home to the world’s largest population, with around 1.412 billion inhabitants. China is therefore the world’s most populous country, followed very closely by India.

9. Kazakhstan with 2.72 million km²

With around 2.72 million square kilometers, Kazakhstan the 9ᵉ largest country in the world. Despite its large size, Kazakhstan’s population is relatively modest, at around 19 million in 2021. Kazakhstan is located in Central Asia and Eastern Europe. It is a Central Asian country, but a small part of its territory lies west of the Ural Mountains, which also places it in Europe. Kazakhstan’s capital is Nur-Sultan, formerly known as Astana, and its most populous city is Almaty.

11. Democratic Republic of Congo with 2.35 million km²

The Democratic Republic of Congo located in Central Africa is the 2ᵉ largest country in Africa and the 11ᵉ largest in the world in terms of surface area. Despite its large size, the Democratic Republic of Congo has a population of around 87 million, making it one of the most populous countries in Africa.

 

12. Greenland (Denmark) with 2.17 million km²

Denmark, located in Northern Europe, is a relatively small country in terms of area, but it has an overseas territory that adds considerably to its overall size. Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark, is the world’s largest island and occupies most of this space. This Arctic expanse covers some 2.17 million square kilometers.

15 Indonesia with 1.91 million km², 15ᵉ place in the ranking of the largest countries in the world

Indonesia covers an area of around 1.9 million square kilometers, making it the world’s largest island country and the 15ᵉ largest in the world. The Indonesian archipelago is made up of thousands of islands, the largest of which are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan. Indonesia is also home to a diverse population, numbering over 276 million by 2021, making it the fourth most populous country in the world.
