Today, we’re sharing with you on our travel blog, the must-sees at Setenil de las Bodegas in Spain. Located in the province of Cadiz, 20 minutes north of Ronda by car, this white village in Andalusia is one of the must-sees in the region. Setenil is best known for its troglodyte dwellings carved out of the rock. Believe us, you’ll love wandering through them! Below, we’ve listed some of the places you won’t want to miss on your visit, so let’s get going!
We recommend starting your visit on Setenil de las Bodegas’ most famous street, Calle Cuevas del Sol. If you’ve ever seen photos of Setenil, chances are they were taken at Calle Cuevas del Sol. You’ll find plenty of terraces to eat or have a drink.
Next, head for another emblematic street of this white Andalusian village, Calle Cuevas de la Sombra. In our opinion, this is one of the most beautiful streets in Setenil, so don’t miss it! It’s a beautiful street and the stores are pretty cool. We were lucky to get there early, and we’d recommend it if you’re visiting Setenil during the tourist season. The street is one of the coolest in the village and that must be very pleasant on hot days!
Continue your visit by heading for the Castillo de Setenil de las Bodegas, making sure to pass through the Plaza de Andalucia. We were advised to skip the castle as there didn’t seem to be much to see, so we’ll let you decide if it’s a visit you’d be interested in! In any case, head back to Plaça de Andalucía (using the Casa Palmero restaurant) so as not to miss one of our favorites of this white village, the Calle Herrería
Calle Herrería is, in our opinion, the most beautiful street in the village of Setenil de las Bodegas. La Herrería, defined by some authors as “one of the most beautiful Andalusian streets”, is a narrow street lined with stepped troglodyte houses, descending to the river. With its sign “Bésame en este rincón” (Kiss me in this corner), it is one of the most romantic streets in the village. The street is on the itinerary of the “ruta del amor”, Spanish for “road of love”. The Route of Love passes through here and has a total of 5 stops in the village. Here are the 5 streets where you can find the love signs if you’re interested:
While you’re there, take the time to stop for a coffee or a bite to eat at the Abacería El Rincón del Beso, a typical Andalusian grocery store. If, like us, you’re a cat lover, you might be lucky enough to cross paths with the establishment’s black cat, who spends his time sleeping in the sun.
If you want to get a great view of Setenil, we recommend the viewpoints of the calle Ventosilla Alta and the del carmen. If you’re in the village at sunset, we recommend the mirador del carmen. You’ll be able to enjoy a magnificent panorama of Setenil de las Bodegas.
In the immediate vicinity of Setenil de las Bodegas, you’ll find two of Andalusia’s must-see white villages, Ronda and Olvera. Allow 25 minutes by car to reach Olvera (to the north) and Ronda (to the south) from Setenil. If you have time during your trip, we recommend our selection of Andalusia’s most beautiful white villages.
If you want to live the Setenil experience to the full and sleep in the village, we recommend this address. You’ll have the opportunity to spend one or more nights in a typical troglodyte house in the village.
If you’re coming to Setenil, there’s a good chance you’ll be coming by car. Pour vous garer, on vous recommande this car park is just a ten-minute walk from Calle Cuevas del Sol. Whether parking or visiting the village, we recommend arriving as early in the day as possible and/or traveling out of season. As one of Andalusia’s must-see villages, Setenil is often overrun by tourists!
